DNV: energy efficiency, innovation vital for tanker sector decarbonisation

Ms Vestereng highlighted the importance of tanker technology innovations in her keynote address at the Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference 2024.

Ms Vestereng said that “though decarbonisation progress may sometimes feel slow, we are entering an area of unprecedented technology exploration,” adding “the strategic decision we make today focused on energy efficiency will be critical for reducing costs and ensuring long term competitiveness for the tanker industry".

In June 2024, Ms Vestereng tackled the tanker sector’s approach to regulatory uncertainty. IMO’s upcoming regulations, particularly those targeting greenhouse gas emissions, have created a pressing need for adaptive strategies. Ms Vestereng, underscored the significance of proactive measures, stating: "The maritime sector must anticipate and adapt to regulatory changes to remain competitive. Flexibility and forward-thinking are crucial for compliance and operational efficiency."

Shipowners, particularly within the tanker segment, are grappling with the challenge of maintaining compliance throughout their vessels’ lifecycles amidst an evolving regulatory framework. Efficiency again was a central theme in Ms Vestereng’s discourse. She emphasised the imperative for tanker owners to optimise energy efficiency across their fleets, citing it as a crucial strategy in the absence of a definitive ’perfect fuel’ solution.

With future fuels likely to be expensive, Ms Vestereng underscored the importance of reducing fuel consumption as a primary objective for today’s operators. This approach not only aims to navigate the uncertain regulatory environment but also positions the industry towards sustainable operational practices.

For the sector to continue and grow, Ms Vestereng noted that, “Collaboration is essential to addressing these challenges. The complexities we face require positive actions, shared expertise and open dialogue.”
