Dong Fang upgrades crew safety on CSOVs, cable layers
Wireless technology will be deployed on offshore construction and commissioning vessels to increase personnel visibility, safety and security
Dong Fang Offshore is investing in wireless technology on its growing fleet of commissioning, service operation vessels (CSOVs) and cable laying vessels supporting offshore wind projects in Taiwan.
It has selected a product to improve safety, security and personnel visibility on its vessels as the owner gains more contracts in Taiwan’s growing offshore wind sector.
Implementing reliable safety and operational visibility systems is an important step in supporting this growth, said Dong Fang Offshore fleet manager Ollie Chasteauneuf.
“Taiwan’s offshore wind industry is entering a period of significant expansion, and the vessels supporting these projects must operate to the highest standards of safety and operational awareness,” he said.
“With large numbers of technicians and project personnel working alongside our marine crews, having clear and reliable visibility of personnel on board is essential.”
Straume, Norway-headquartered ScanReach will provide its personnel-on-board (POB) tracking product, ConnectPOB, to Dong Fang for its CSOVs and cable layers. This network provides real-time personnel visibility on board vessels operating in complex offshore environments.
Wireless nodes installed throughout the vessel create coverage across the main operational areas, and personnel are issued wearable devices for tracking and automatic detection.
Software provides operations managers with a real-time overview of personnel distribution within defined zones for greater awareness.
“ScanReach’s ConnectPOB system provides a robust and practical solution that enhances both everyday operations and emergency preparedness,” said Mr Chasteauneuf.
“Our business extends worldwide, so we will continue to expand into emerging markets and implement dependable safety technologies to help ensure we maintain safe and efficient offshore operations.”
ConnectPOB operates on a wireless mesh architecture, so it can be deployed progressively across vessels without disrupting normal operations.
Dong Fang operates a fleet of 18 vessels, including cable layers, service vessels, anchor handling tugs and offshore construction vessels, and employs over 350 personnel.
