DP World and the Government of Senegal have signed agreements for the development of a new deepwater port at Ndayane, approximately 50 km from the existing Port of Dakar
The first phase of this project will see an investment by DP World Dakar of US$837M, making it the single largest private sector investment in the history of Senegal and it is expected to be followed by a second phase of investment of US$290M.
DP World Dakar – the local joint venture company established between DP World and the Port Authority of Dakar – will build a new 600 hectare port outside Dakar in addition to developing a new 300 hectare container terminal alongside the existing terminal in the Port of Dakar.
After the new development, the Port of Dakar will be used for both residential and commercial waterfront and as a cruise terminal. DP World is also planning to develop a special economic zone next to the new Port of Ndayane.
The project is seeking to further establish Sengal’s role as a major logistics hub and gateway to west and northwest Africa, and support the country’s the Plan Senegal Emergent strategy. The director general of the Port Authority of Dakar Aboubacar Sedikh Beye said “The development of the new port at Ndayane will provide a strong engine of growth for the next phase of the Plan Senegal Emergent.”
Phase 1 of the project will see the development of 840 m of quay and a 5 km marine channel, which will be designed to manage 366-m long ships. Construction of additional 410 m of container quay and further dredging to manage 400 m vessels will take place during the second phase.
DP World group chairman and chief executive Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem said “This will be DP World’s biggest port investment in Africa to date, and is a testament to our commitment to Senegal and belief in its potential for further economic growth. The new port will create jobs, attract new foreign direct investment to the country, and enable new trading opportunities that bring about economic diversification. I would like to thank His Excellency President Macky Sall for his leadership and vision for the development of the port, and for partnering with us on this exciting project.”
