Stockholm’s Frihamnen Port saw its final container vessel unloaded on 1 June 2020. Traffic will now be redirected to Stockholm Norvik port, a new roro and container terminal which opened 27 May 2020
The new port enables goods to be shipped to the growing Stockholm region more sustainably, with shorter approaches to the 16.5-m deep port which is closer to Sweden’s national highways.
The container terminal at Stockholm Norvik Port is now open, both for vessel calls and shore-based business operations. The container terminal is run by Hutchison Ports, one of the world’s largest container terminal operators, with 52 ports in 27 countries.
Ports of Stockholm marketing and sales manager Johan Wallén said “It feels wonderful to finally open Stockholm Norvik Port, but we are also very proud we have been able to provide such efficient container handling right to the end at Frihamnen port. With incredibly dedicated and professional personnel, as well as customers willing to work with us, we have handled 40 lifts per hour, all the way to the final container.”
Work is ongoing to complete the roro terminal of Stockholm Norvik Port which is due to open Q3 2020.
The CTF container terminal at Frihamnen port will remain open until 23 June 2020 for customers to collect the last of their containers.
