Equinor awards Snorre expansion subsea contract
Equinor has awarded a contract to a Norwegian offshore engineering contractor for subsea work on the Snorre expansion project
DeepOcean has clinched a contract from Equinor to provide subsea construction and installation operations for the Snorre export and import gas (SNEIG) project in the northern North Sea.
Executing the SNEIG project in the Tampen area is part of Equinor’s broader Snorre expansion scheme and is scheduled for 2026.
Equinor plans to extend production this field beyond 2040. Snorre, which lies in 300–350 m of water, was discovered in 1979 and has been operational since 1992 with hydrocarbon production through a tension-leg platform (Snorre A), a purpose-built semi-submersible unit (Snorre B) and an extensive subsea network of wells, flowlines and umbilicals.
DeepOcean said its scope of work includes installing a subsea safety isolation valve, a subsea umbilical, and tie-in to the existing pipeline using connectors and associated tooling.
The Oslo, Norway-headquartered contractor will also provide preparatory subsea construction activities including isolation pig tracking, pipeline coating removal and cutting operations. Suitable crossings for the new umbilical will be prepared and installed at the Snorre field before mechanical completion and commissioning activities are performed.
“This is a complex subsea project that underlines Equinor’s dedication to responsible resource utilisation through life-of-field extensions,” said DeepOcean managing director of European operations Olaf Hansen.
He added the award includes providing onshore engineering, procurement and project management services, managed from DeepOcean’s office in Haugesund, Norway.
Offshore operations will be undertaken Q3 2026 using a subsea construction vessel from DeepOcean’s chartered-in fleet.
Stabilised oil from the Snorre A and Vigdis fields is transported by pipeline to the Gullfaks A platform for storage and export. Oil from Snorre B is piped for 45 km to Statfjord B for storage and export, and gas from both platforms is injected back into the reservoir to support oil production.
