Latest changes to Evergreen’s shipbuilding contract with GSI adjust the price of the 24,000-TEU container ships
The board of directors of Singapore’s Evergreen Marine (Asia) has approved revised pricing terms of the shipbuilding agreement for five LNG dual-fuel 24,000-TEU box ships.
Forming part of a US$3Bn order first unveiled in February 2025, the container ship quintet will be built at Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), part of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).
According to a stock exchange filing by Taiwan-based parent company Evergreen Marine Corp, the liner will now spend between US$1.3Bn and US$1.48Bn on the five newbuilds, representing a unit cost of between US$262M and US$295M. The announcement is said to reflect adjustments to the vessel’s equipment, which have resulted in cost changes.
No further details regarding vessel specifications or delivery dates have been shared.
In April, Evergreen Marine also revised the terms of its agreement for six 24,000-TEU LNG dual-fuel units at South Korea’s Hanwha Ocean, now estimated to cost between US$1.6Bn and US$1.8Bn.
Over recent months, Evergreen Marine has continued to add dual-fuel tonnage and larger Megamax vessels.
Last year, the carrier ordered the 11 LNG dual-fuel container ships split across the Chinese and South Korean shipyards, with five of the 24,000-TEU units assigned to GSI, to which the latest repricing notice relates, and six to Hanwha Ocean.
Also in 2025, the company booked 14 LNG dual-fuel box ships, with the order for 14,000-TEU vessels split between SHI and GSI.
Additionally, in late January, Evergreen Marine placed orders for 16 3,100-TEU and seven 5,900-TEU ships at CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding and Jiangsu New Yangzi Shipbuilding.
The company appears to be taking a proactive approach to fleet renewal with orders modernising its fleet across various size segments as the liner market enters a heavy delivery cycle.
According to Alphaliner’s Top 100, Evergreen Marine is the world’s seventh-largest container carrier, operating 240 vessels with a further 74 units currently on order.
