ExxonMobil has launched Mobilgard 540 X, the latest addition to its MobilGard cylinder oil range and the first cylinder oil to be gas-validated by WinGD
The lubricant is formulated for use with both low sulphur (0.10% and 0.50%) fuels and LNG, and ExxonMobil said the product meets WinGD’s requirements for all three fuel types.
The company said Mobilgard 540 X has passed fit-for-use testing on the most recent engine designs and is specifically formulated to fight deposits forming in engines using low sulphur fuels and LNG. The cylinder oil also allows for a substantial feed rate reduction compared to current-generation cylinder oil formulations, according to the company.
ExxonMobil global marine lubricants sales manager Frans Horjus said “As the first cylinder oil to be approved for use with all three low-sulphur fuel types and gas validated by WinGD, Mobilgard 540 X is a first-to-market offering in our industry that allows vessel operators to seamlessly switch between these fuels without compromising on quality or performance.
"This should give vessel operators peace of mind that we are constantly looking ahead at future regulatory changes and providing the lubrication solutions to help them navigate the road ahead.”
With the inception of the sulphur cap, vessels face new challenges from running on low sulphur fuels. At Riviera Maritime Media’s recent webinar on Turbocharger maintenance, panellists pointed out that some 65% of all machinery failures are linked to lubricants.
Mobilgard 540 X will be available in major ports around the world from June 2020, including Singapore, the Antwerp-Rotterdam-Amsterdam port area, Houston and Hong Kong. It will also be offered at additional locations through a network of more than 650 ports throughout the world.
Riviera will host a week of free to attend 45-minute webinars focused on marine fuels commencing 29 June. Register your interest now
