EEW Special Pipe Constructions has loaded out the first monopile foundations and transition pieces for the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) demonstration project in the US
The load-out took place at EEW SPC’s facilities in the port of Rostock, Germany. The foundations are now being shipped to Virginia for installation later this year.
The monopile foundations will be the first foundations for an offshore windfarm to be installed in federal waters in the US.
The CVOW demonstration is the first project in federal waters to have secured approval from the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM).
US utility Dominion Energy started preparatory work on the two-turbine demonstrator off the coast of Virginia Beach in July 2019.
EEW said that, in the longer term, it is working to realise monopile manufacturing in the US, starting with Ørsted’s Ocean Wind project.
EEW Group chief executive Christoph Schorge said, “Even though CVOW only consists of two turbines, it has profound importance for the development of the US offshore wind market. This milestone in federal waters will pave the way for large-scale commercial projects to follow it.”
