Developer Parkwind and turbine manufacturer MHI Vestas have confirmed the completion of the first turbine on the Northwester offshore windfarm in Belgium
The turbine was installed by Jan de Nul’s installation vessel, Vole au vent.
The 219-MW project is the first offshore windfarm to deploy the V164-9.5 MW turbine from MHI Vestas. It will consist of 23 V164.9-5 MW turbines.
All of the main turbine components are being assembled and pre-commissioned at a marshalling harbour in Flushing. The first four turbines left Flushing on the vessel earlier this month.
Turbine installation at NorthWester 2 is due to be completed in the first quarter of 2020.
MHI Vestas chief operations officer Flemming Ougaard said, “Installation of the world’s first operational wind turbine of in excess of 9 MW is a proud moment for our company.”
MHI Vestas secured a contract for the turbines for the project in late 2018. The contract was awarded after financial close for the project on 5 October 2018 and includes a 15-year service agreement for the turbines.
