Fjord Line is investing in onboard communications systems on its fleet of ferries, including a new fast catamaran, in preparation for rising passenger numbers
It has extended a long-standing partnership with Telenor Maritime for onboard mobile services for five more years. Through this partnership, both companies will develop new digital technologies to improve passenger experiences on board four ferries.
When Fjord Line puts its new super-fast catamaran FSTR into scheduled service between Kristiansand, Norway and Hirtshals, Denmark, Telenor Maritime will provide 3G/4G mobile communications for passengers. This vessel is fitted with communications technology to provide fast and reliable mobile connectivity for both guests and crew.
“Telenor Maritime will equip FSTR with world-class mobile technology to the delight of passengers and crew,” said Fjord Line chief digital officer Roald Rossnes. “FSTR will carry passengers across the Skagerrak comfortably at high speed, with a reliable and world-class mobile coverage providing fast 3G/4G mobile broadband connections for our passengers,” he said.
“With this new ship, Fjord Line consolidates its leading role in the transition to the low-emissions society and the maritime green shift.”
Telenor Maritime said roaming prices have been reduced in recent years and it has eliminated high bills as most Scandinavian countries’ major mobile operators offer maritime roaming packages, providing passengers with control on cost and usage.
“In a period of pandemic and major challenges for the ferry and cruise line companies, we greatly appreciate that our customers choose to continue their co-operation with Telenor Maritime as a partner and provider of connectivity and digital services towards the green shift,” said Telenor Maritime chief executive Lars Erik Lunøe.
“The last in a line of renewed contracts are Fjord Line, which we have had a relationship with since 2007.”
Telenor Maritime provides high-speed internet and 4G in the same ecosystem. It serves more than 100 shipping companies, providing data and telecommunications connections to 30M people on board more than 500 ships and offshore installations.
