Great Eastern Shipping Co (GESCO) is investing in engine performance monitoring and diagnostics across its shipping fleets
It is installing ABB’s Ability Tekomar Xpert software on 46 tankers and bulk carriers to improve maintenance and emissions reporting. This fleetwide implementation follows successful trials of the engine monitoring software on two vessels.
Tekomar Xpert will enable onboard analysis of engine performance and instant diagnostics of potential issues and will recommend optimisation solutions. This replaces manual measurements and monthly data analysis of onboard propulsion systems.
This tool will simplify the tasks of GESCO’s performance management department which analyses engine data from all vessels and compiles submissions for the EU’s Monitoring, Reporting and Verification regulation and IMO’s Data Collection System for carbon emissions.
GESCO’s decision to invest in this software followed feedback from superintendents confirming this “software identified engine issues and potential future issues,” said head of technical Anjan Kumar Sahu.
“Our fleet has been growing and we wanted monitoring software that could help to analyse engine performance and guide us to better-running engines,” he said.
One of the main benefits of Tekomar Xpert is cutting the cost and time needed to identify the cause of engine problems, Mr Sahu added.
Engine makers often require further data at specified loads to isolate the cause of an engine problem, leading to a further delay in resolving issues.
Tekomar Xpert can identify root causes of engine performance deviations automatically during normal operation, minimising delay and facilitating rapid corrective action.
It runs on any engine, regardless of type or age, and is built on the ABB Ability platform with the highest standards of cyber security.
Tekomar Xpert provides shipowners and operators with key engine indicators via intuitive dashboards, allowing them to monitor, optimise and benchmark engine performance while preventing engine problems.
