Greece, Ukraine partner to supply US LNG to Kyiv via multi-country corridor

State-owned companies DEPA Commercial and Naftogaz signed a letter of intent (LOI) on 16 November to deliver natural gas to the Ukrainian market during the winter period from December 2025 to March 2026.

Under the proposed framework, US-sourced LNG volumes are expected to be transported via ’Route 1,’ jointly offered by the gas transmission system operators (TSOs) of Greece (DESFA), Bulgaria (Bulgartransgaz), Romania (Transgaz), Moldova (VestMoldTransgaz) and Ukraine (GTSOU).

This LOI follows DEPA’s participation in a long-term LNG sales and purchase agreement with US-based LNG producer Venture Global. The agreement, which begins in 2030, commits to the purchase of at least 0.5M tonnes per annum of US LNG over 20 years.

The deal was signed between Venture Global and the Greek joint venture Atlantic-See LNG, formed by Greek companies AKTOR and DEPA. Notably, this marked Greece’s first-ever long-term LNG supply agreement with a US exporter.

Zelenskyy visits Greece

The partnership announcement coincided with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s working visit to Athens, where he met Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

President Zelenskyy stated that the deal will “cover nearly €2.0Bn (US$2.3Bn) needed for gas imports to compensate for the losses in Ukrainian production caused by Russian strikes.”

According to the joint announcement, DEPA Commercial and Naftogaz’s collaboration comes amid a highly competitive and rapidly evolving European energy market, “in which energy solidarity and Greece’s critical energy infrastructure enhance regional energy security and ensure stable natural gas flows along the Vertical Corridor.”

DEPA Commercial chief executive Konstantinos Xifaras described the initiative as an “energy bridge” between the infrastructures of Greece and Ukraine, supporting broader European energy resilience.

Naftogaz chief executive Sergii Koretskyi added, “We are consistently expanding the geography of supplies to guarantee stable heating for Ukrainians and strengthen the energy security of the entire region.”
