Theodore Veniamis-led Golden Union is pressing ahead with its fleet expansion, adding a Capesize bulk carrier at a time when the charter market is showing unusual early-year strength
Shipping data platforms now list the prominent Greek owner with 2013-built, 181,393-dwt Cape Crassier, formerly known as Cape Armeria. The vessel was constructed in Japan, consistent with Golden Union’s established preference for Japanese-built tonnage.
Riviera has previously reported on Golden Union’s appetite for baby-Capesize vessels, with three ships entering the fleet between late 2024 and the second half of 2025. These include 2011-built Gu Pride, 2013-built Km Hakata, and 2010-built Flag Marina.
According to Equasis data, Golden Union currently operates a fleet of around 40 bulk carriers, primarily comprising Capesize and Kamsarmax units.
Strong charter market
The Greek owner’s addition comes amid positive momentum in the Capesize charter market, which is defying the traditional seasonal slowdown seen at the start of each year.
China’s dry bulk market typically slows heading into the Lunar New Year, but the first three weeks of 2026 have bucked the trend: volumes are up year-on-year, tonne-miles are rising, and freight rates are showing no signs of easing, Xclusiv Shipbrokers noted in its latest weekly report.
Analysts highlighted two key drivers supporting market resilience.
First, global coal flows are undergoing a reshaping. December metallurgical coal imports rose sharply month-on-month, with inland Mongolia remaining dominant. Meanwhile, seaborne volumes from Australia and Canada accelerated, while US-origin cargoes continued to be suppressed by tariff-related issues.
Second, charterers appear to be advancing their longhaul coverage programmes, particularly for iron ore and bauxite shipments from Brazil and West Africa.
“With the Capesize fleet growth having been restrained in recent years, any sustained increase in Atlantic supply has a direct multiplier on tonne-miles, and the first Guinea cargoes linked to Simandou only reinforce the longer-term direction of travel,” Xclusiv Shipbrokers commented.
Against this firmer backdrop, Capesize asset values have risen by up to 24% compared with January 2025, with 10- to 15-year-old vessels recording the strongest gains.
