HD KSOE eyes future bulk carrier projects after Newcastlemax AiP

The company recently received approval in principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register (LR) for its next-generation 210,000-dwt Newcastlemax bulk carrier design. A KSOE official told Riviera this marks a proactive step to prepare for future opportunities in the dry bulk market.

“This collaboration provides an enhanced understanding of Newcastlemax bulk carrier applications for future shipbuilding projects while maximising commercial potential in this advancing field of technology,” said KSOE head of global shipyard technical sales team Bong-geo Kim.

South Korea’s diminished market share

According to BRS Shipbrokers’ annual review, South Korea’s share of the global bulk carrier orderbook was 0% as of end-2024, unchanged from the previous year and down from 0.5% in 2022. China dominated with a 72.6% share, followed by Japan with almost 23.0%.

More recent data from Xclusiv Shipbrokers’ weekly report shows in the first half of 2025, China secured 54.0% of bulk carrier newbuilding contracts, while Japan captured 42.0%.

Market sources have previously noted South Korea has shifted its focus away from the bulk carrier sector, prioritising higher-value segments such as gas carriers, tankers and container ships. Whether the shipbuilding nation will now also re-engage in the large-size bulk carrier market in the coming months remains to be seen.

Design highlights

According to the joint announcement by HD KSOE and LR, the new 210,000-dwt Newcastlemax design offers multi-fuel flexibility, supporting conventional fuels as well as LNG, ammonia and methanol. This allows shipowners to better adapt to evolving environmental regulations and future fuel market shifts.

The vessel will feature advanced smart navigation systems and an optimised hull form, aimed at improving fuel efficiency, operational safety and reducing CO2 emissions.

“The AiP represents a new milestone in the development of next-generation bulk carrier technology, positioning both LR and KSOE as leaders in the industry’s transition towards sustainable and technologically advanced maritime solutions,” said LR director of global bulk carrier segment Nikos Kakalis.
