Canada-based CleanDesign Power Systems will incorporate the Lavle Proteus lithium-ion battery energy storage system (Proteus ESS) in its hybrid power management system for drilling rigs
CleanDesign said its hybrid energy management and battery power system will optimise power generation on drilling rigs. The drilling rig setup consists of existing generators and the CleanDesign hybrid power upgrade. Together, the system is expected to reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions, shorten genset runtime hours, and cut power-related downtime on the drilling rig.
US-based hybrid and electric propulsion systems developer Lavle will deliver the first Proteus ESS to CleanDesign in Q3 2020.
To mitigate the risk of battery fires, Lavle uses cell level thermal isolation to prevent thermal runaway, according to CleanDesign chief executive Joel Donen. “The technical teams at Lavle and CleanDesign have also worked in great detail to tailor the battery performance to the power and energy requirements of drilling at maximum rates of penetration,” said Mr Donen. He said the Lavle Proteus ESS “will add value to the oil and gas industry as well as support the industry’s commitment and efforts around environmental, social, and governance goals.”
Lavle chief executive Dr Jason Nye agreed, saying, “These advanced hybrid drill rig power systems will make a meaningful impact in reducing the costs and carbon emissions related to drilling rig operations and we are proud to be part of this solution.”
