Testing and verification is underway at Italy’s first mainland small-scale LNG bunkering (ssLNG) and heavy transport fuelling depot, following delivery of its first LNG cargo from Spain
Located at the port of Ravenna, the Depositi Italian GNL (DIG) small-scale LNG facility is jointly owned by Pir (51%), Edison (30%) and Scale Gas (19%). The facility is scheduled for commissioning in October, according to Italian gas and electric utility Edison.
Knutsen OAS Shipping’s LNG carrier Ravenna Knutsen transported the first cargo of LNG to the facility from the Enagás plant in Barcelona, Spain. Built to DNV class in 2020 by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard, Spanish-flagged Ravenna Knutsen has a capacity of 160,000 m3.
With the DIG plant in Ravenna, Edison launches in Italy the first integrated small-scale LNG logistics chain (small-scale LNG gas plants), with a plan for the development of sustainable mobility both by land and by sea. The transaction confirms Edison’s commitment to decarbonisation in the transport sector in line with European objectives. In fact, compared with traditional fuels, LNG is able to completely eliminate emissions of SOx and particulate matter, 80-90% of NOx and reduce CO2 by about 20%.
With a storage capacity of 20,000 m3 of LNG and an annual handling of over 1M m3 of liquid gas, the Ravenna depot will be to supply at least 12,000 trucks and up to 48 ferries per year.
