Three Japanese corporations, Kanadevia, Taisei, and MOL have agreed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on the commercialization of technology for floating offshore windfarms
The agreement is the companies’ response to the Japanese Government’s 7th Strategic Energy Plan, which was approved by the Cabinet on 18 February 2025, which includes an ambitious target for renewable energy.
The Plan set a target of 40-50% for renewables in the country’s electricity mix by 2040, with offshore wind the key element in making renewable energy Japan’s main source of power.
In addition, as recently highlighted by OWJ, Japan’s cabinet recently approved a bill amendment that will allow offshore wind projects to be built in the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
Against this backdrop, Kanadevia and Taisei, which specialize in construction and fabrication of floating foundations, and MOL, which has expertise in towing and mooring them, have agreed to work together to share their knowledge and expertise, and create a forum to address construction of foundations for floating wind turbines.
The companies said their priority is to reduce the cost of fabricating foundations for floating wind turbines, reduce risk and address challenges around towing foundations for future projects in Japanese waters.
