Longitude Engineering, part of the LOC Group company, has completed the concept, basic design and provided the construction specification for yard engagement and procurement for a new cable-lay ship for a client in Taiwan
The design was completed on behalf of Woen Jinn Harbor Engineering. Prior to the design, Longitude also evaluated the company’s current assets and potential conversions to meet the operational criteria.
In 2018, Ørsted signed a contract with Woen-Jinn for array cable installation for the Greater Changhua offshore wind projects, a deal that sees the Taiwanese company invest in a new cable-laying vessel.
The dynamic positioning DP2 vessel was designed with a focus on cable operations in Taiwan’s environmental conditions and has received approval in principle by ABS and CR Class.
The back deck was specifically designed to be suitable for export cable, array cable and cable repair work.
Longitude said the design provided was based on regular engagement with Woen-Jinn as well as other stakeholders, including the end client and classification societies. Local constraints were also accounted for, such as drydock limitations, cranage and harbour facilities. Combined, this provided an indepth understanding of the functional requirements and design constraints of the vessel, ensuring the designs delivered optimised the vessel’s performance and owner’s requirements.
The cable lay ship is intended to support Taiwan’s offshore wind industry. Established in 1986, Woen Jinn Harbor Engineering is involved in harbour dredging, harbour construction, ship salvage and submarine cable installation. The company is based in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan.
Woen-Jinn hopes the vessel will enable it to become competitive in the offshore wind cable installation market throughout Asia. The contract with Ørsted requires Woen-Jinn to install a significant volume of array cables and will secure a substantial backlog of work for it.
