Classification society ClassNK has awarded Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ (KHI) SOPass service an Innovation Endorsement
The certification is issued for three categories – Ships, Product & Solutions, and Providers – under the society’s certification service for innovative technology. Product & Solutions covers digital equipment and software technology installed for use on vessels.
The swift certification service was developed in July 2020 with the aim of promoting the spread and development of innovative technologies.
SOPass helps improve fuel and transport efficiency through route optimisation and boil-off gas (BOG) management for LNG carriers.
Optimum routes are selected under the relevant navigation limitations based on the motion and resistance of the ship and weather forecast information. On LNG carriers, SOPass uses a thermal simulation model to estimate BOG volume and the amount of heel required for the next voyage. KHI estimates that ships equipped with SOPass can reduce CO2 emissions by an average of 3%.
ClassNK’s experts verified the functions of SOPass, which include providing optimised routeing by integrating weather data with simulation of ship motion; providing optimised operation for LNG carriers based on the calculation of the amount of BOG; and evaluating plant efficiency and propulsion efficiency including future deterioration prediction; and issued the certificate.
Since the launch of the Innovation Endorsement in 2020, ClassNK has certified 63 ships with the Digital Smart Ship notation. For the Product & Solutions category, two cases have been certified, and a further 21 cases are currently under inspection.
