Knutsen Ballast Water AS has won type-approval from the US Coast Guard (USCG) for its KBAL ballast water treatment system
The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Center has announced it has issued the 38th US Coast Guard Ballast Water Management System (BWMS) type-approval certificate to Knutsen Ballast Water AS, after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type-approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.
The treatment principle of the KBAL BWMS is based on using a pressure vacuum reactor in combination with UV radiation at intake and discharge. This approval covers two models with maximum treatment rated capacities of 400 m3 per hour and 3,000 m3 per hour.
The USCG has determined the KBAL operational limitations as:
The USCG certificate states that the KBAL BWMS has not been verified to meet the requirements of 46 CFR Subchapter F and J, and may not be installed on a US flag vessel. The BWMS may be installed in hazardous locations to which it is certified on a foreign flag vessel subject to approval of the foreign administration. The system’s main control cabinet, operator station, UV control cabinet, and UV power cabinet must remain outside of hazardous locations.
