Kongsberg Digital (KDI) has secured contracts to supply maritime training simulators to academies and colleges in the Philippines and South Korea
In the latest contract award, KDI will supply a package of full mission and desktop training simulators to Zamboanga City State College of Marine Sciences and Technology in the Philippines. K-Sim Navigation and K-Sim Engine simulators, managed through KDI’s local partner PCI Technologies, will be installed at the college in October 2021.
KDI executive vice president for digital ocean Andreas Jagtøyen said after installing the simulators at Zamboanga City State College, most training centres in the Philippines use KDI simulators.
“Building a relationship with the Zamboanga City State College of Marine Sciences and Technology not only helps us to assist in guaranteeing the professionalism of future maritime graduates, but also cements our already leading position within maritime training in the Philippines,” said Mr Jagtøyen.
“Zamboanga City is the country’s largest exporter of tuna and other marine products, and this contract confirms KDI’s strong global position within training for crews and operators in the fishery segment.”
In June and July, KDI secured contracts from two South Korean educational establishments. Busan National Maritime High School and Incheon National Maritime High School both commissioned KDI to deliver K-Sim Navigation ship’s bridge simulators in Q4 2021.
KDI consolidated its position in South Korea in 2021, installing simulators in two training institutes. It delivered simulators for offshore vessel operations and dynamic positioning (DP) to the Korea Institute of Maritime and Fishery Technology (KIMFT) in Q1 2021 and supplied K-Sim Mooring simulators to the Busan Techno Park foundation.
KIMFT will use the K-Sim simulators to train researchers and industry personnel in offshore and DP operations.
Incheon National Maritime High School will deploy K-Sim Navigation simulators to provide students with realistic training using vessels, objects and equipment they would expect to use during normal operations.
Busan Techno Park and Busan National Maritime High School will expand their existing suites of K-Sim simulators with add-on features on advanced and new devices, such as offshore mooring and oil-spill response functions.
Mr Jagtøyen highlighted the importance of these contracts in South Korea for technology developments in shipping. “South Korea is a key global player in the journey towards Maritime 4.0, with its highly successful shipbuilding and shipowning companies,” he said. “By securing these contracts, KDI has gained valuable partners to support the industry in this venture.”
Mr Jagtøyen said KDI simulator training will be of “vital importance in supplying this industry with the best-qualified and most efficient crew and operators for many years to come.”
