Kongsberg Maritime secures deck machinery contract for floating wind vessel

Due for delivery in July 2027, the vessel, designed by Focal, will be used for the Ulsan floating wind project 70 km off the coast of Ulsan, South Korea. Engineered to have a high level of versatility, it will support mooring operations, cable laying and other construction activity essential to floating wind projects.

The company’s senior sales manager offshore support and constructions Tore Herstad said, “Kongsberg Maritime has decades of experience in anchor handling and offshore support, and together with our fellow Norwegian partner IP Huse, we are proud to bring that expertise to the emerging floating wind sector.”

The Norwegian company’s scope of supply includes a winch package with a 500-tonne main towing/AHT winch system with three drums, complemented by secondary winches for rope installation, a rope tensioner system, tugger winches, an active heave-compensated working winch, and a complete Towcon X8 control system.

All of the winches will be equipped with Kongsberg Maritime’s proprietary low-pressure hydraulic motors, which are designed and manufactured in Brattvåg, Norway. Kongsberg said mechanical aspects of the main winches will be designed and produced by IP Huse, at Harøy, Norway.

In addition to the winches, the contract introduces two innovative products developed specifically for large anchor handling/mooring installation vessels, a next-generation shark jaw and new AH100 rail cranes.

The AH100 cranes will have dual arms for lifting and precision handling, with interchangeable tooling to support project-specific tasks.

The shark jaw, capable of handling chain sizes up to 220 mm, will incorporate remotely adjustable inserts for enhanced safety and operational flexibility.
