Kuwait Oil Tanker Co (KOTC) has completed installing VSAT on all 26 tankers in its fleet. It has deployed Marlink’s Sealink VSAT services on crude, oil product and liquefied petroleum gas carriers to improve its global logistics operations and enhance crew welfare packages. Marlink was awarded the contract to deliver VSAT to KOTC’s fleet in January 2015. Installation of the antenna and other hardware on the final vessel, Mutriba, was completed and fully online by mid-June 2015.
Marlink’s VSAT solution for KOTC vessels incorporates three virtual local area networks, Ku-band coverage, unlimited L-band backup and automatic switching between carrier frequencies. Vessels have committed information rates of up to 512 Kbps, with temporary upgrades up to 1 Mbps on request for bandwidth-heavy applications such as video conferencing. The increased bandwidth enables KOTC to operate more efficiently and make greater use of video streaming, in addition to working smarter through collaboration, using video over IP.
“We have upgraded our on board communication facilities quickly and efficiently,” said Bader Al Otaibi, KOTC’s fleet engineering group manager. “All our vessels are now fully operational on the VSAT network with a positive effect on our business critical communications in addition to being able to provide crew with enhanced facilities to access the internet and stay in touch with friends and family,” he added.
