The US Marine Safety Center has issued the 40th US Coast Guard BWMS type-approval certificate to Kurita Water Industries
The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued the type-approval certificate to Kurita Water Industries after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type-approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.
The treatment principle of the KURITA ballast water management system (BWMS) is based on chemical injection at intake and neutralisation at discharge. This approval covers seven models with maximum treatment rated capacities between 375 m3/ hour and 3,750 m3 / hour.
The Kurita Water Industries BWMS was examined and tested by Independent Lab DNV GL in accordance with the requirements contained in 46 CFR 162.060.
According to the US Coast Guard, the system shall be installed and operated in accordance with the operation, maintenance, and safety manual (OMSM) of KURITA BWMS, OMSM-01-07, Rev. 07, dated 8 December 2020.
The US Coast Guard noted the following operational limitations:
The KURITA BWMS has not been verified to meet the requirements of 46 CFR Subchapters F and J, and may not be installed on a US-flag vessel. The KURITA BWMS Ex models may be installed in hazardous locations to which they are certified on a foreign-flag vessel subject to approval of the foreign administration. The BWMS must be marked in accordance with 46 CFR 162.060-22.
Norway-based TeamTec has signed an agreement with Kurita Water Industries to rebrand the filterless BWMS as TeamTec Senza BWMS.
