HSD Engine offers a digital optimisation platform that incorporates extensive turbocharging knowledge to improve fuel consumption and emissions
As a leading enginebuilder of low-speed and medium-speed marine engines, South Korea’s HSD Engine has been co-operating with ABB Turbocharging for decades. Formerly Doosan Engine, HSD has been manufacturing engines since 1984, having accumulated over 100M horsepower for large ship engines installed in everything from bulk carriers to container ships to very large crude carriers. For these types of ships, HSD Engine manufactures slow-speed diesel and dual-fuel engines under licenses from both WinGD and MAN Energy Solutions. HSD also manufactures medium-speed MAN engines. HSD Engine manufactures between 90 and 100 engines annually.
Under an agreement announced in June, the South Korean enginebuilder will expand its relationship with ABB Turbocharging by offering ABB’s diagnostics and advisory software Tekomar XPERT to shipowners operating its two-stroke and four-stroke marine engines. Under the deal, HSD Engine will offer the software as an option to shipowners.
A digital performance optimisation platform, Tekomar XPERT is designed to be used with any engine. The digital platform empowers ship operators with the insight needed to improve fuel consumption and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions — both critical considerations in the drive towards improving ship efficiency and meeting the requirements of the Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI).
To generate an engine performance evaluation, Tekomar XPERT leverages turbocharging knowledge accumulated by ABB through its wide base of turbochargers in service across thousands of different engine installations. Ship operators can access key engine indicators provided via intuitive dashboards, allowing them to monitor, optimise and benchmark engine performance while providing an early warning of any potential engine problems.
ABB Turbocharging anticipates that HSD Engine’s customers deploying Tekomar XPERT will benefit from significantly improved engine performance. To generate its performance evaluation and advisory, the software collects and analyses high-quality engine operating data, transforming it into actionable insights to reduce fuel consumption, cut emissions and optimise maintenance. Additionally, using the Tekomar XPERT for fleet web applications, ship managers can benchmark and optimise engine performance even across diverse fleets with multiple engine types.
HSD Engine senior general manager Sang Min Lee feels the ability to offer the Tekomar XPERT platform to ship owners that use its engines gives the company a competitive edge by providing more value to ship operators.
“In response to market demand, HSD Engine reviewed various solutions for engine performance optimisation and evaluation,” said Mr Lee. “We expect that Tekomar XPERT will give us a competitive advantage in the market and our target is to provide it as part of our standard engine package. After a long partnership in the turbocharger field, we are pleased to extend our relationship with ABB into digital solutions to deliver even greater value for our customers,” said Mr Lee.
ABB Turbocharging senior vice president digital customer solutions Cristian Corotto called the deal between the companies “an important step in expanding the installed base. We are honored that HSD Engine has chosen to take this step into digital optimisation with us.” ABB Ability Tekomar XPERT currently has an installed base of more than 8,000 engines on more than 2,000 vessels.
