Dalian COSCO KHI shipyard’s optimised VLCC is lighter than similar size VLCCs to significantly reduce operating costs
310,300-dwt VLCC Yuan Kun Yang has a total length of 333 m, a draught of 30 m, a design speed of 15.5 knots and is the latest generation of energy-saving and environmentally friendly VLCCs built by Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering. Yuan Kun Yang has been delivered to COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation.
By optimising the hull shape and structure of the original Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering VLCC design, the deadweight of Yuan Kun Yang is thousands of tonnes higher than the same size ship designed in market, the weight of the empty ship is significantly reduced and the cabin capacity is maximised.
In addition to the increased earning capacity, the fuel consumption of the main engine is about 6% lower than that of similar ships on the market, and it is calculated that around US$500,000 per year can be saved from operating costs.
Yuan Kun Yang is on a six-month timecharter to Trafigura for US$39,000/day, according to VesselsValue. Dalian COSCO KHI Ship Engineering has one more VLCC on order for COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation.
COSCO Shipping Energy Transportation operates a live fleet of 45 VLCCs, and has four more on order including the aforementioned Dalian COSCO vessel.
