Malaysian production platform revitalised in brownfield project
Two tugs, a heavy-lift vessel and a barge were employed to install modules on a production platform in a brownfield project in southeast Asia
Marine Masters has completed installation of three modules on the Duyong central processing platform (CPP) in Malaysia.
Heavy-lift vessel Asian Hercules 2 installed a 240-tonne topside module, a slugcatcher weighing 90 tonnes and a dropped object protection frame on the main production platform, completing the project in July 2024.
The Dutch maritime contractor said it concluded all preparations and execution activities on site within six weeks, far shorter than other projects of this type, which usually take between four and six months.
It worked with regional vessel owner, Singapore-based Asian Lift, to fast-track operations without impacting safety standards.
These three brownfield modules were transported by 100-m flat-top transport barge B-28 and towed around the Malaysian Peninsula from Port Klang to Duyong CPP in roughly six days.
Offshore operations were conducted by 3,200-tonne self-propelled crane vessel Asian Hercules 2, which was towed by the anchor handling tug Bridgewater 68 over four days to the offshore location and moored in an eight-point mooring pattern once near the existing platform.
“The star mooring pattern enabled the vessel to be moved a few hundred metres backwards and forwards to facilitate operations in a speedy manner,” said Marine Masters director Danny Spaans. “Manoeuvring vessels in this manner is a complex and challenging process.”
With a brownfield module loaded on board B-28, located on the hip of a larger tug Bridgewater 132, the team was able to navigate in front of Asian Hercules 2. The crane vessel then lifted the module off the barge and proceeded with the installation at the CPP. This process was repeated for each installation.
“Personnel on board Bridgewater 132 and Asian Hercules 2 liaised with the tug master throughout this process, ensuring the safety and success of operations which were concluded speedily,” said Mr Spaans.
