Liebherr’s facility in Rostock, Germany has achieved another milestone in designing, constructing and installing the huge crane it was contracted to supply for DEME’s new offshore wind installation vessel, Orion
Using a specially designed portal crane at Port of Rostock, Liebherr and DEME have installed one of the key parts of the massive heavy lift crane, its 145-m long boom, which has now been connected to the crane’s huge slewing unit.
Liebherr Rostock managing director Leopold Berthold said, “This is the first time Liebherr has manufactured and installed a crane of this size.”
All of the main components of the HLC 295000 crane have now been installed on Orion. The crane has a maximum lifting capacity of 5,000 tonnes at an outreach of 35 m and a maximum lifting height of in excess of 175 m above the deck of the vessel.
Once the crane’s installation has been completed, the vessel is due to begin work later this year on the Moray East offshore windfarm in the UK.
