MCA urges workboat operators to schedule new rule-compliance surveys
Vessel owners should schedule surveys now to avoid missing the deadline for compliance with Workboat Code Edition 3
The UK’s Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and Workboat Association are urging operators to ensure vessels are compliant with the updated code of safety standards, the Workboat Code Edition 3, which came into force in December 2023.
Owners have until a vessel’s next renewal examination or three years after the date of entry into force of the code, whichever is later, to have a compliance survey.
The Workboat Association and MCA are expecting high demand for surveys at the end of the year and the risk of vessels becoming non-compliant if owners and operators miss out.
Vessels which have not transitioned to the new code must secure certification by 13 December 2026 to remain active.
MCA and Workboat Association advised operators to check the code, prepare the vessel and book the survey.
“The UK’s fleet of workboats delivers a vital service for a wide range of maritime industries,” said MCA lead for vessel codes Rob Taylor.
“To ensure business keeps flowing, we want to help make sure everyone is ready.”
The Workboat Code Edition 3 was created to help the industry remain safe and support technology development.
“It is a clearer code, but there are changes, so we want everyone to be prepared without a last-minute rush,” said Mr Taylor.
This unified code includes maritime safety legislation for remotely operated unmanned vessels and workboats using alternative fuels.
“With the first transition deadline fast approaching, I urge all operators of previous Workboat Code editions to ensure their vessels, crew and documentation are fully aligned,” said Workboat Association chief executive Kerrie Forster.
“This is not just a regulatory milestone. It is an important opportunity for the industry to demonstrate its commitment to safety, consistency, and professionalism.”
