McDermott’s pipelay vessel burnishes ESG credentials with ABS certification

McDermott’s heavy-lift rigid pipelay vessel DLV2000 has been awarded the SUSTAIN-1 classification from ABS, marking the first time a marine construction vessel in its class has achieved this sustainability certification.

The SUSTAIN-1 classification recognises DLV2000 for its environmental performance, including energy efficiency, waste management, emissions reduction and coastal ecosystem preservation.

“This classification stands as a testament to our ability to adapt and meet evolving customer needs with a focus on operational excellence and environmental stewardship in marine construction,” said McDermott senior vice president, subsea and floating facilities, Mahesh Swaminathan. Mr Swaminathan said the notation shows the company’s “approach to advancing sustainability within offshore project execution and sets a new standard for environmentally responsible marine operations that leverage vessels in DLV2000’s class."

Echoing Mr Swaminathan’s comments, McDermott executive vice president, sustainability and governance, Rachel Clingman said, "Embedding ESG principles into every aspect of our business is central to advancing our sustainability goals." 

The certification aligns with IMO’s efforts toward the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which emphasises the importance of sustainability in marine operations.

The SUSTAIN-1 notation demonstrates the vessel’s alignment with key elements of the environmental, social and governance (ESG) requirements outlined in the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Awarding of the notation means the design and construction of the unit is assessed against and adheres to the requirements of the ABS Guide for Sustainability Notations.
