Towage operator Svitzer Europe has taken delivery of the first of two ice-breaking tugs from Med Marine to support its operations in Scandinavia
The Robert Allan-designed 30-m 60TBP azimuth stern drive (ASD) tugboat was built and delivered by Med Marine at its group-owned Ereğli Shipyard on 29 March 2021.
The vessel is a TundRA 3000 MED-A3060-ICE-class tugboat and will be operated by Svitzer in the company’s north European fleet. The first vessel of the series, Eregli 84, was launched in November 2020.
The TundRA 3000 MED-A3060-ICE design is suited to tugs that operate in extreme winter conditions. Med Marine said the winch is capable of operating over the stern as well as via a trunk running through the deckhouse, located in an enclosed area to achieve improved performance even in severe cold-weather conditions.
This series of vessels will operate across Scandinavia, predominantly serving ports in Denmark and Sweden. The operator said the tugs will strengthen the level of service Svitzer provides to customers in Scandinavia and will further reinforce Svitzer’s presence in the region.
Svitzer Embla is set to be delivered in April 2021 and will commence work in Sweden. In May 2021, a second tug, Svitzer Edda, will be delivered and begin mobilising towards Denmark, where it will serve customers throughout Scandinavia.
