Now under US Coast Guard (USCG) type-approval review, little has been heard about the NiBallast ballast water treatment system developed by Jiangsu Nanji Machinery in China since it appeared in the June 2014 Ballast Water Treatment Technology newsletter
At the time, the NiBallast was compared to Mitsui Engineering’s FineBallast MF as having a first stage basic filtration process to remove sediment and larger organisms prior to water passing through the membrane modules.
In the case of the NiBallast system, the first-stage stainless steel filter is a 50-μm self-cleaning section filter followed by a second stage of microfiltration membrane to remove all large and small micro-organisms and even bacteria, according to Jiangsu Nanji Machinery.
The filtered ballast water then enters the ballast tank, where it has a further de-oxygenation treatment stage using nitrogen. The filtered and de-oxygenated ballast water is directly discharged overboard.
According to Jiangsu Nanji Machinery, the pressure at the first filter is controlled and the filter cleaned using back-flushing. The company states the membrane has been tested for long life.
NiBallast is currently certified to: CCS, BV, NK, LR, ABS, AMS (USCG) certification.
The NiBallast system is under review by the US Coast Guard, with DNV the Independent Laboratory.
