Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has launched the Ishin Next smart ship project to improve vessel safety and reduce the environmental impact of its ships. It plans to incorporate the latest information and communications technology, which will include advanced telecommunications and data analytics, in future ships.
MOL president and chief executive Junichiro Ikeda said the smart ship project will build on the success of the Senpaku Ishin project that commenced in 2009. He added that MOL intends to develop two fields of technologies for safer vessel operations and lowering the environmental impact, which would strengthen the business and increase its corporate value.
Under the concept, MOL will adopt the technologies on newbuilding vessels. It will verify practical effects of these technologies over the first year of their operation after delivery from the shipyards. MOL will then share its technological development policies with customers and other stakeholders.
