A US tugboat owner has expanded its ship-assistance and docking services on the Lower Mississippi River through the acquisition of a rival operator
Moran Towing Corp has completed the acquisition of Bisso Towboat and integrated its tugs into its US fleet to expand its ship-handling and docking services in southern states’ ports.
The New Canaan, Connecticut-headquartered owner said all the New Orleans, Louisiana-based operator’s operations, centred along the Lower Mississippi River, would be conducted under the Moran Towing name.
Founded in 1890, Bisso Towboat was running the only all-tractor-tug fleet on the river, with 11 vessels averaging 12 years in age and with combined installed power of 38,070 kW, and with a workforce of 78 personnel.
“The completion of this integration is a significant milestone for Moran, and one that reflects the tireless effort and professionalism of both organisations,” said Moran Towing president and chief executive, Ted Tregurtha.
“Bisso’s people made this a seamless transition, and we are proud to welcome them to the Moran team as we continue to strengthen our presence on the Lower Mississippi River."
Bisso provided services for ships navigating between the mouth of the Mississippi River and Baton Rouge, and at the start of 2025, it welcomed newbuild tugboat Mr Brian after its construction by Main Iron Works in Houma, Louisiana.
Following the acquisition, Moran operates an extensive, well-maintained fleet of vessels including over 100 tugboats, nine articulated tug-barge units and six other barges.
Former Bisso president, Scott Slatten, has joined the Moran management team as a strategic advisor.
“The strength of this combined organisation goes beyond fleet size or geographic reach," said Mr Slatten.
"It is rooted in the talent, experience, and shared values of the people who make it run every day."
Bisso Towboat was represented in the transaction by Legacy Capital and Phelps Dunbar.
