Klaveness Combination Carriers (KCC) has now taken delivery of all its new-generation combination carriers which carry wet and dry cargoes, saving an estimated one third in CO2 emissions compared with conventional tonnage
With the delivery of the last CLEANBU newbuilding at the end of May 2021, KCC now has its full fleet of 17 combination carriers on the water, vessels built to transport both wet and dry bulk cargoes.
The fleet cuts CO2 emissions by 30-40% compared with standard dry bulk and tanker vessels by efficiently combining dry bulk and tanker cargoes, with minimum time without cargo on board.
The saving in CO2 emissions is being noticed by traditional tanker charterers.
KCC chief executive officer Engebret Dahm said, “We see an increased focus from customers on cutting emissions from their ocean freight, and we are experiencing increased customer acceptance of our combination carriers’ capability to reduce inefficiencies and cut carbon emissions.”
He noted, “This was an important trigger for the recent conclusion of the landmark shipment contract for our CLEANBU fleet with a major international tanker vessel charterer.”
The ability to carry wet and dry cargoes allows the combination carrier access to two or more cargo sectors.
Currently, demand is weaker for wet cargoes with even the normally buoyant (compared with crude oil) clean product cargoes suffering weaker demand. The opposite is the case with dry bulk cargoes, which are enjoying firm levels of demand.
KCC noted that it is in the EU Emission Trading System (EU ETS) that combination carriers stand to make long-term gains. Under the EU ETS, a transatlantic cargo on a Kamsarmax dry bulk carrier and a LR1 tanker have combined CO2 emission of 6,470 tonnes.
The same cargoes on a KCC CLEAANBU combination carrier have CO2 emission of 4,130 tonnes.
