NAVTOR has voyaged further into providing shipping with data-driven performance analytics through the acquisition of Tres Solutions
The Egersund, Norway-headquartered e-navigation provider can deliver vessel analytics and performance optimisation following this deal. Its acquisition follows on the heels of NAVTOR’s launch of NavFleet fleet management application at the beginning of February 2021.
Tres Solutions provides vessel and fleet analytics to ship operators, owners, technical management and charterers for fuel and environmental performance. NAVTOR already delivers e-navigation through electronic navigational charts, ECDIS and voyage planning solutions.
NAVTOR chief executive Tor Svanes said the company had moved into navigation and fleet analytics through its new product and the Tres purchase. “We are number one in the market for e-navigation, but we were missing fleet performance from our portfolio,” Mr Svanes said.
“Vessel performance optimisation is an obvious next step for NAVTOR,” he continued. “The launch of NavFleet gives our customers shoreside tools for better fleet management, and with the addition of Tres Solutions, the software to deliver optimal value, by taking performance data and extracting the intelligence needed to enable smarter, more profitable and efficient operations.”
Mr Svanes suggested this acquisition would be followed by further developments. “We plan to grow the NAVTOR platform going forward,” he said.
NAVTOR has the backing of Accel-KKR’s US$9Bn capital to fund future growth. Accel-KKR took a majority stake in NAVTOR in August 2020.
Acquiring Tres was not just about adding services, it also included offices in different markets, such as in Houston, US, Germany and India. The combined company has 13 offices worldwide and more than 7,000 individual vessels and customers in over 60 countries.
Following the Tres purchase, services and solutions will be integrated with owners, operators, managers and charterers offered e-navigation, fleet management and vessel analytics.
“We always like to stay one step ahead, developing innovative solutions that help solve this industry’s challenges and meet customer needs,” said Mr Svanes. “Performance optimisation is key to a more sustainable business future, so it is a natural progression.”
Tres president and chief executive Aaron Holton said its flexible platform provides insight into vessel and fleet operations using software, analytics, algorithms and ship models. “Data is core to what we do,” he said. “We collect, validate and analyse data. We can see if there are reduced performance improvements for operators and charterers.”
This includes information from noon reports, real-time data from bridge equipment, such as GPS and speedlogs, sensors in the engineroom, flow meters and weather reports. “We improve the transparency of data collection,” Mr Holton said, “for full visibility of environmental performance of vessels and fleet.”
With the addition of NAVTOR, data from ship ECDIS and AIS will also be included in Tres’ analytics.
Fleet optimisation and performance monitoring technologies will be discussed during Riviera’s Vessel Optimisation Webinar Week, 3-5 March - use this link for more details and to register for these events
