The keel-laying ceremony for the sixth of eight cruise ships Viking Ocean Cruises has ordered from Fincantieri has taken place at the shipyard in Ancona.
The first building block of the ship is about 11 m long and 28.8 m wide.
The unit, whose delivery is scheduled in 2019, will be placed in the small cruise ship segment. Like its sisterships, it will be 47,800 GT, have 465 cabins with accommodation for 930 passengers and a total capacity of over 1,400 people, including the crew.
Fincantieri said that the Viking units “feature the most advanced technologies for energy saving and for meeting the strictest environmental regulations with energy-efficient engines and an exhaust gas cleaning system”.
The first of the series, Viking Star was built by Fincantieri and delivered in March 2015. The second, third and fourth - Viking Sea, Viking Sky, Viking Sun - were delivered from the shipyard in Ancona in 2016 and 2017. Viking Orion, the fifth unit, was launched at Ancona in Q3 this year, with delivery scheduled in 2018.
The last three units, including the one whose first building block has just been laid, will be ready respectively in 2019, 2021 and 2022.
