Artificial intelligence and analytics can improve voyage efficiency to help owners reduce bunker costs
Ship operators, owners and managers can reduce ship operating costs by optimising voyages using artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics. These technologies can also reduce the navigational risk by routeing ships in efficient and effective voyages away from hazards.
Using algorithms to optimise routes can achieve the least-cost in fuel consumption terms and avoid hazards and adverse weather.
Ship masters can verify routes planned by others in the bridge team and onshore managers can check navigation plans before approving them for the crew.
Charterers can also evaluate the cost of voyages using data transferred directly from ships and share their own voyage plan advice in real-time with ship operators and onboard crew.
All this will be possible as digital chart supplier ChartWorld collaborates with maritime software and data analysis provider Napa. Together they will integrate ChartWorld’s voyage planning platform, MyRouteAppraisal (MyRA), with Napa Fleet Intelligence.
“By using our AI-based algorithms, operators are able to reduce the cost of each voyage, execute it more safely and with far less work for the crew on board,” said Napa director of shipping services and solutions Risto Kariranta.
Napa Fleet Intelligence will optimise routes using ChartWorld electronic navigational charts for implementation using ECDIS.
“With the adoption of ECDIS, voyage planning has become increasingly complex,” said ChartWorld’s business development director Oliver Schwarz. “We have created a solution that reliably gives owners and operators the information they need to make the most cost effective and time efficient choices for their fleets.”
He explained that using this service, best practice for voyage planning and implementation can be followed.
“Best-practice risk management requires four-eyes on voyage planning, with the master verifying the second mate’s plans,” he said.
“Onshore personnel can use MyRA to precheck onboard navigation planning for additional certainty, as well as comparing different route alternatives for the same voyage.”
ChartWorld has signed a reseller agreement with Napa allowing for a range of Napa services to be provided as an integral part of ChartWorld’s MyRA platform.
