Classification society ClassNK has type approved a new onboard internet-of-things (IoT) platform for remote monitoring and decision support
Alpha Ori Technologies’ SmartShip is a digital shipping solution for data collection, monitoring and operational advice.
SmartShip collates data from disparate onboard systems and displays this for crew and managers to enable them to make better decisions.
ClassNK’s certification approves the platform as a computer-based system that conforms to the class society’s rules governing a product performing remote monitoring and diagnostics, situational awareness and decision support systems, both on board and ashore.
Alpha Ori Technologies said SmartShip is already installed on 30 ships and is being installed and commissioned on another 60 vessels. Mid-sized gas carrier, Hourai Maru, delivered on 11 March 2019, was the first ship certified with a ClassNK-approved SmartShip.
Alpha Ori Technologies co-chief executive, and chief executive of Singapore-based shipmanager Synergy Group, Captain Rajesh Unni thinks IoT technology is beginning to transform the shipping sector.
“Our approach is tackling pain points and enabling rules-based decision making,” he said. “It gives clients added transparency and delivers multiple operational, financial and environmental benefits.”
The SmartShip platform takes a holistic approach to solving maritime pain-point issues for every stakeholder in the logistics value chain, including ship operators, owners and managers, port management, surveyors, ship registries, insurers and shipbuilders.
“It leverages our proprietary hardware and software and cloud-based infrastructure to collect and transmit more than 5,000 data points from various onboard systems,” said Capt Unni.
“SmartShip utilises the data collected to create value for stakeholders, often including additional information such as weather overlay, statutory and regulatory information.
“The front-end user experience includes intuitive applications which facilitate monitoring and diagnostics of operational issues.”
