Tokyo-based e5 Lab has established Marindows Inc – a new company to help market its Marindows operating system
The newly established Marindows Inc will focus on developing Marindows OS – a digital platform for the marine industry linking edge computing on board ships with cloud services and shore-based applications to provide a range of services.
The company was launched with a three-year plan to roll out its services for ocean broadband access to deliver digital tools and AI analytics to the shipping market.
In 2022, the company expects to launch an operational service aiming to install Marindows OS on 70% of Japanese coastal ships by the end of 2023. The launch also involves partners Softbank, ClassNK and marine electronic manufacturer Furuno.
SoftBank vice president, head of global business strategy division, technology unit, Hidebumi Kitahara said “SoftBank is committed to solving social issues through corporate activities and businesses to realise a sustainable society where information and minds are connected. We are evolving the maritime industry with the power of information communication, and co-creating it with Marindows, which is building an industry base through digital transformation. We believe that digital platforms using cutting-edge communication technologies, such as the next-generation satellite communications and high-altitude platform station, AI, and IoT can bring innovation to global industries, and will contribute to further accelerating digitalisation.”
e5 Lab is a joint venture between Asahi Tanker, Exeno Yamamizu Corporation, Mitsui OSK Lines and Mitsubishi Corporation, that aims to develop electrically powered, zero-emissions vessels.
