Port of Trelleborg, in Sweden, and TT-Line are introducing communications technology on ferries and around the harbour for internet access with speeds up to 300 Mbps
This is 30 times the bandwidth people can access on most merchant shipping through satellite communications and 10 times internet speeds at many households.
Nowhere Networks is installing its radio communications in the Port of Trelleborg, the largest roro port in Scandinavia and on TT-Line ferries operating across the Baltic Sea, connecting Sweden with ports in Germany, Poland and Lithuania. TT-Line will be the first shipping company to use high-speed internet in Trelleborg.
This investment in connectivity comes as Port of Trelleborg is introducing smart port operations and wants to offer its shipping lines a cost-effective way to connect and obtain high internet capacity.
“All parties benefit from this collaboration,” said Port of Trelleborg IT manager Mikael Simonsson. “In particular our shipping customers who can utilise a wireless high-speed internet connection for both business-critical IT systems and for the travellers on board who would like to use it for work or to communicate with their friends and family,” he said.
TT-Line will use Nowhere Network connectivity on its fleet of six ships on the routes Trelleborg-Travemunde-Rostock and Trelleborg-Swinoujscie, with up to 18 departures a day, offering wireless internet on board to passengers.
“We are convinced we have chosen the right provider for this important service and we are looking forward to offering our guests a fast and reliable internet service soon.” said TT-Line head of technology Joachim Parduhn.
TT-Lines services help make Port of Trelleborg a large roro hub in the Baltic. The port has four transport corridors and international traffic, with 30 arrivals and departures daily to Germany, Poland and Lithuania.
In 2019, 11.9M tonnes of goods and approximately 1.2M units and 1.8M passengers passed through the port.
Nowhere Networks chief executive Asbjörn Frydenlund said investing in long-range radio-based internet connectivity will “open up great opportunities” for the Port of Trelleborg and TT-Line.
“Our full service concept is a complete solution for long-range internet connectivity, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, which is becoming a standard within the maritime industry in Europe,” said Mr Frydenlund.
Nowhere Networks’ technical solution consists of a radio communication unit with built-in antenna tracker that automatically communicates a wireless signal from ship to land, keeping the vessels connected at all times.
It has an intelligent cloud-based platform for more than 10,000 vessels and enables automated control and automatic resource optimisation.
