Strengthening its capacity to offer LNG and gas for marine and on-road transport in the Nordics, Finnish state-owned gas supplier Gasum has completed its acquisition of Linde AG’s LNG and biogas business and Nauticor’s marine bunkering activities in Germany
Under the previously announced acquisition, Gasum will add two LNG terminals, one in Nynäshamn, Sweden (20,000 m3) and another in Ålesund, Norway (1,200 m3), the LNG bunkering vessels Seagas and Kairos and 48 gas filling stations in Sweden and Norway. A former ferry that was converted to an LNG bunkering vessel, Seagas has a capacity of 180 m3, regularly refuelling the dual-fuel cruise ferry Viking Grace. Purpose-built Kairos, with a 7,500 m3 capacity, operates in the Baltic Sea.
A small-scale LNG liquefaction plant in Tjeldbergodden in Norway that was previously to be included in the acquisition is instead being decommissioned in 2020 by Linde, according to a Gasum vice president of communications Olga Väisänen.
Some 35 employees, along with customer bases and sets will be added through the businesses, which generate annual revenues of more than €100M (US$109M).
Gasum chief executive Johanna Lamminen called the transaction “an important step for Gasum when building the Nordic gas ecosystem and responding to increasing customer demand for low-emissions energy solutions.”
Prior to the acquisition, Finnish state-owned Gasum Oy – an importer of LNG and natural gas and the largest producer of biogas in the Nordics – had interests in four LNG import terminals and one small-scale liquefaction plant. Gasum has plans to build a network of 50 LNG, liquefied biogas, CNG and compressed biogas stations in the Nordics by the early 2020s. It opened its ninth gas filling station in Sweden in February to serve heavy-duty vehicles and passenger cars.
