The design of the five – Happy Delta, Happy Diamond, Happy Dover, Happy Dragon and Happy Dynamic – is a further development of the D-gracht class of Biglift’s parent company, Spliethoff, which will allow the two companies the flexibility to switch cargoes if need be on either vessel type.
At 17,500 dwt and with 1A ice class, the five will have two cranes each with a capacity of 400 tonnes, as well as one crane with a 120 tonnes capacity. The vessels will have high allowable deck loads to stow heavy cargoes. When visibility from the wheelhouse is hindered by large deck loads, navigation can be handled from a second command station forward.
Additional accommodation, a classroom and training bridge will be provided for 10 cadets, who will live, work and follow classes on board as part of their maritime education.
The hulls will be 156.9m long overall, with a moulded breadth of 25.6m and a summer draught of 10.3m. Tank top area amounts to 1,590m2 and the tweendeck floor space is 1,700m2. A total of 1,091 TEU of containers will be able to be stored in the hold and on deck.
The 8,400kW main engine plant for each vessel will be supplied by Wärtsilä, and a bow thruster of 850kW will also be installed. A top speed of 17 knots on a draught of 7m will be possible. OSJ
