UK-based StratumFive has become the latest certified application provider on Fleet Data
Information from ships can be fed into StratumFive’s voyage intelligence platform Podium to deliver optimum voyage insight, enabling shipowners to lower fuel costs and emissions.
Fleet Data collects data from onboard sensors. It preprocesses that data on the vessel and uploads it to a central cloud-based database over Inmarsat’s satellite constellations. Users then have a dashboard and an application process interface (API). StratumFive will use the Fleet Data API to link this data with Podium.
“Inmarsat and StratumFive will combine connectivity and mission-critical data to harness the true potential of data for vessel optimisation and transform the future of shipping,” said Inmarsat Maritime head of digital solutions Marco Cristoforo Camporeale.
Podium then integrates data sources and third-party applications enabling shipowners to quickly visualise correlated data streams in a dashboard environment, for operational monitoring and decision-making.
Within the Podium environment, billions of data points received through Fleet Data can be assembled by the user to optimise voyages.
With past vessel performance, near real-time visibility of present performance, predictive performance, opportunities to save fuel, cut emissions, and lower operational costs are made easier, said StratumFive chief operating officer Ross Martin.
“The addition of Fleet Data to the growing list of Podium integrations provides our clients a complete end-to-end integrated IoT experience,” said Mr Martin.
He explained how combining Fleet Data and Podium minimises IoT challenges for owners. “Accessing timely sensor data ashore has been historically challenging and expensive for many shipowners and operators, typically requiring bespoke onboard data networks with connections to hundreds of individual data points,” said Mr Martin.
“Often this has involved custom interfaces to legacy equipment or delayed and unreliable manual inputs,” he explained.
These issues are almost eliminated by combining Fleet Data and Podium.
“Combining these solutions enables all clients to quickly visualise correlated data streams fleetwide, in a shoreside dashboard environment. This is the solution that our industry needs to reap the promised cost savings and other operational efficiencies of digitalisation,” said Mr Martin.
StratumFive provides voyage monitoring and intelligence to more than 13,000 ships. This also includes weather routeing after the acquisition earlier this year of FleetWeather operations centre in the US.
Fleet Data is provided to shipping companies through Inmarsat’s partnership with voyage data recorder (VDR) and ECDIS supplier Danelec Marine, which has also started a pilot project with class society DNV GL.
Together they will combine DanelecConnect’s onboard data capture and IoT capabilities with DNV GL’s Veracity service eco-system.
This agreement enables Veracity users to access virtual data rooms in DanelecConnect to optimise route planning, vessel performance and fuel consumption for hundreds of ships.
“DanelecConnect taps into existing data infrastructure to create resilient IoT capabilities for customers looking to collect more data for diverse use cases with multiple stakeholders,” said Danelec chief executive Casper Jensen, “such as vessel performance optimisation, safety and voyage documentation, and remote VDR surveys.”
Danelec is the first data provider on Veracity to standardise its data according to the ISO standards ISO19847 and ISO19848.
“The fact Danelec has decided to standardise its data and make it available on Veracity, will facilitate for shipowners, managers and other data consumers to both acquire, use and re-use data across many different use-cases,” said Veracity managing director Mikkel Skou.
Shipping companies can optimise voyages using marine weather forecasting services, such as Navimeteo which provides detailed and meteorologist-validated location-specific site forecasts for planning operations.
In November, Elcome International was appointed as a non-exclusive distributor of Navimeteo weather forecasting and observation services globally. This agreement enables Elcome to provide weather routeing using UK Hydrographic Office’s Admiralty digital nautical charts and publications.
