Navtek Naval Technologies has launched its second all-electric-powered tug in Turkey and is preparing it to soon start operations
Gisas Power II was lifted from the drydock to the quayside at Navtek’s affiliate shipyard in early November. It will undergo final commissioning, sea trials and then enter service to support ship manoeuvres into and out of shipyards in Tuzla, Turkey.
Like its sister tugboat, Gisas Power, it was built to a Zeetug30 design with around 30 tonnes of bollard pull and speed of 10 knots. Gisas Power II has an overall length of 18.7 m, beam of 6.7 m, depth of 4.7 m and a draught: 3.5 m. Corvus energy storage systems drive two propulsion motors connected to azimuth thrusters.
Navtek collaborated with Turkish power systems integrator BMA Technology and drive and converter supplier ABB on these fully electric tugs.
For safety, Gisas Power has two redundant battery rooms, one fore and one aft, that are maintained at a constant temperature by a cooling system. It can be charged in less than an hour through a quayside charging station.
At the 26th ITS Convention in Istanbul, September 2022, delegates were able to board Gisas Power to see its power systems for zero-emissions towage and then view its performance in the Bosporus.
At the associated conference, Naval Technologies general manager Ferhat Acuner outlined the operational, environmental and commercial benefits of these Zeetugs.
He said in 2.5 years of operation, Gisas Power had reduced CO2 emissions by 446 tonnes and slashed fuel and opex costs compared with a traditional diesel-powered tug.
Total fuel costs using an all-electric Zeetug30 were reduced by more than 50% and maintenance costs fell by 79% with the data derived by comparing the Zeetug30 with a similar diesel-powered tug in the shipowner’s fleet.
