Navtek Naval Technologies has launched its third all-electric-powered tugboat in Turkey and has started operating the second vessel
Gisas Power III was lifted from the drydock to the quayside at Navtek’s affiliate shipyard early January 2023.
It will undergo final commissioning, sea trials and battery charging tests, then enter service to support ship manoeuvres in shipyards in Tuzla, Turkey.
Like its sister tugboats Gisas Power and Gisas Power II, it was built to a Zeetug30 design with 30 tonnes of bollard pull and speed of around 10 knots.
Gisas Power III has an overall length of 19 m, beam of 7 m, depth of around 5 m and a draught of almost 4 m. Corvus energy storage systems drive two propulsion motors connected to azimuth thrusters.
Navtek said Gisas Power II has started operations at sea, while Gisas Power is manoeuvring ships around Turkish ship repair and construction yards.
It collaborated with Turkish power systems integrator BMA Technology and drive and converter supplier ABB on these fully electric tugs. For safety, Gisas Power has two redundant battery rooms, one fore and one aft, that are maintained at a constant temperature by a cooling system. It can be charged in less than an hour through a quayside charging station.
At the 26th ITS Convention in Istanbul, September 2022, delegates were able to board Gisas Power to see its power systems for zero-emissions towage and then view its performance in the Bosporus.
