China’s Wuxi Brightsky Electronic Co, Ltd’s Wuxi BSKY ballast water management system (BWMS) was granted US Coast Guard type-approval on 28 April 2021
The US Coast Guard Marine Safety Center issued the 42nd US Coast Guard BWMS type-approval certificate to Wuxi Brightsky Electronic Co, Ltd of Wuxi, in the Huishan District of China, after a detailed review of the manufacturer’s type-approval application determined the system met the requirements of 46 CFR 162.060.
The treatment principle of the Wuxi BSKY BWMS is based on hydrocyclone separation and UV treatment at intake, and UV treatment at discharge. This approval covers 36 models with maximum treatment rated capacities between 80 and 6,000 m3 per hour.
According to Wuxi Brightsky’s data sheet, the Wuxi BSKY ballast water treatment system contains no moving parts or filters. The incoming ballast water passes through the sea chest strainer and unfiltered into the ballast water pump.
From there, the ballast water passes through an ultrasonic pretreatment module. This does not alter the flow rate, reported Wuxi Brightsky. The ballast water then enters the top of the carefully designed hydrocyclone where heavier objects spin down to the bottom and are drained off and ejected overboard.
The lighter, clearer water is siphoned off the top of the hydrocyclone and passes through a UV module and into the ballast tanks. On deballasting, the ballast water bypasses the hydrocyclone, and passes through the UV module before being ejected overboard.
