Gas carrier owner Solvang has contracted Wärtsilä to provide digital operational performance monitoring on ships in its fleet
Wärtsilä has started a five-year contract to deliver an operational performance improvement and monitoring (OPERIM) solution to support the operational efficiency of Solvang’s fleet. OPERIM is a cloud-based platform enabling Wärtsilä experts to monitor and improve the performance of large and very large LPG carriers, semi-refrigerated and ethylene transportation ships.
A digital twin model of the gas cargo handling systems and key performance indicator reports are used to benchmark vessels. These data insights are then made available to Solvang’s crew and onshore teams allowing them to make adjustments to suit operating conditions or remedy performance and condition issues.
The first phase of this agreement will involve OPERIM being installed on 15 Solvang LPG/ethylene carriers fitted with Wärtsilä cargo handling systems. Monthly fleet management meetings will be held to review the data produced, and to agree on improvement actions.
During the second phase of the agreement, OPERIM will be made available to an additional 12 vessels in the Solvang fleet.
Solvang operates nine semi-refrigerated and ethylene carriers, ranging 12,000-21,000 m3, including four delivered in 2019. It also operates nine large fully refrigerated LPG ships of 60,000 m3 one fully refrigerated mid-size LPG carrier of 38,000 m3, fixed on a long-term time charter and seven VLGCs, including four Panamax-sized 75,000-80,000 m3, one of 82,000 m3 and two 84,000 m3.
Solvang fleet director Tor Øyvind Ask expects Wärtsilä’s OPERIM to provide operational benefits and improve plant performance. “Wärtsilä’s digitally-enabled service provides transparency and valuable insights to our operations,” he said. “This agreement allows us to use Wärtsilä’s OPERIM solution, but goes further by engaging experts from both sides to work collaboratively to find the best solutions for our business.”
Mr Ask continued, “whether it be in operator usage, operational routines, or the plant performance. We have created a collaborative approach to operational improvements.”
