Swedish ferry operator Stena Line will start a new freight-focused connection between Latvia, Sweden and Germany by adding a port-call in Karlskrona, Sweden, on the existing ferry route between Liepaja in Latvia and Travemünde in Germany from 13 August
Stena Line operates seven routes in the Baltic Sea for freight and passenger transportation.
The company said the new route will enable more effective trade and transport opportunities between the Baltic countries and southern Scandinavia.
Stena Line director for the Baltic Sea north, Erik Thulin said the company is responding to an increase in demand for sea transportation in the region. “This is an expansive region where Stena Line already has a strong presence and we are pleased to expand our customer offering. Our intention is to increase the frequency and capacity even further going forward.”
Two Denmark-flagged ropax ferries Stena Gothica and Stena Urd operate on the route between Liepaja and Travemünde. Both 171-m long ferries have a freight capacity of 1,600 lane m. The new weekly port-call in Karlskrona will initially be in the direction Liepaja-Travemünde on Thursday evenings.
Despite the impact of the pandemic on the passenger ship segment, Stena Line continues to grow. Chief executive Niclas Mårtensson said “This is an exciting addition to our operations and service to our customers. We are strengthening our position as Europe’s leading ferry company and responding to the increased market demand in the Baltic Sea.”
The company is modernising its fleet and construction has commenced on two large Stena E-Flexer in Weihai, China.
