US-based Hornbeck Offshore Services has won an arbitration award of US$18M from VT Halter Marine, resulting from disputes arising from an offshore support vessel construction contract signed eight years ago
VT Halter Marine, subsidiary of ST Engineering, won a counterclaim against Hornbeck Offshore Services (HOS) of US$2.1M in the arbitration proceedings.
ST Engineering said in a release that the arbitration proceedings involved disputes arising from a vessel construction agreement dated 14 November 2011 for the design and construction of certain vessels by VT Halter Marine for HOS. In the course of the arbitration proceedings, HOS claimed damages totalling US$48.7M, mainly on the basis that the vessels constructed by VT Halter Marine had alleged errors in design and construction. VT Halter Marine, Pascagoula, Mississippi, had in the arbitration proceedings asserted counterclaims against HOS for US$2.4M.
In November 2011, Covington, Louisiana-based HOS signed a contract with VT Halter Marine to construct 10 OSVs. Dynamic positioning class 2 capable, the OSVs were designed to have 6,150 tonnes of deadweight capacity, 3,300 m3 of liquid mud carrying capability, 1,126 m2 of deck area, accommodation for 24 and a fire-fighting class notation. Taking into account strict environmental considerations, the design was developed with a double-hull that eliminates any fuel storage adjacent to the sideshell, and propulsion machinery that meets EPA Tier 3 emissions requirements.
